The Starting Point: Zero AI Search Visibility

In early March 2026, SellerMockups had a problem that most websites don't even know they have: zero AI search visibility. The site was completely invisible to every generative AI search engine on the market.

The site had decent organic traffic. It had 64 published blog posts. It had a real product that real people were using. But when you asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Copilot for mockup generator recommendations, SellerMockups didn't exist. No ChatGPT visibility. No Perplexity citations. Nothing.

The Google Analytics data told the story: 1 total LLM session in the prior 30 days. One. From any AI platform. Zero AI referral traffic worth measuring.

I decided to use SellerMockups as a test case for our generative engine optimization (GEO) methodology. Here's the exact GEO strategy we executed over the next 30 days — the decisions, the timeline, and the AI search traffic growth that followed.

Day 1: The AI Visibility Audit (March 4)

Before touching anything, I ran a full AI search visibility audit — examining the site the way an AI crawler would see it.

What I found:

  • No llms.txt file (the plain-text file AI models use to understand a site)
  • No ai-plugin.json (the metadata file for AI plugin discovery)
  • robots.txt didn't mention any AI crawlers — GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, and others were being treated like any generic bot
  • Zero structured data or schema markup anywhere on the site
  • 64 blog posts with no author attribution and no E-E-A-T signals
  • No About page with real person information

The site was essentially locked in a room with no door for AI to enter through. No wonder there was no AI referral traffic.

Phase 1: Building the AI Discovery Foundation (March 4)

The first priority in any GEO strategy is basic: make the site findable and parseable by generative AI search engines.

llms.txt — I created a structured plain-text file describing what SellerMockups is, what it does, who it's for, and where to find key pages. Think of llms.txt as a README file for AI models. It's not a universal standard yet, but ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other AI platforms check for it when crawling sites.

ai-plugin.json — Metadata following the emerging AI plugin specification. Another discovery file that costs nothing to add and signals AI-friendliness.

robots.txt updates — I explicitly allowed 8 AI crawlers: GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-Web, PerplexityBot, Bytespider, GoogleOther, Applebot-Extended, and cohere-ai. Most sites either block these or don't address them at all. Explicitly allowing them is a clear signal for LLM optimization.

Structured data for AI search — Added Product, SoftwareApplication, and FAQPage schema markup to key pages. This gives AI structured data to extract rather than having to parse marketing copy. Research shows 61% of pages cited by AI platforms use schema markup.

Comparison pages — Built pages targeting queries like "SellerMockups vs Placeit" and "best AI mockup generator." These are exactly the commercial-intent queries people type into ChatGPT when evaluating tools — and commercial intent prompts trigger web search 53% more often than informational queries.

This entire phase took a few hours. Nothing fancy. Just creating the infrastructure that lets AI find and understand the site.

The Waiting Game (March 5–24)

After Phase 1, I watched the analytics. This is the part most people don't talk about — the gap between making changes and seeing results.

During these three weeks, LLM traffic started trickling in. Not dramatically, but it moved from zero to a handful of sessions. The crawlers were finding the site and indexing the new structured data. But it wasn't enough to draw conclusions.

The interesting part: Bing organic traffic started ticking up during this period. The same structured data that helps AI platforms also helps Bing's algorithm. That was the first hint that GEO improvements have a broader impact than just AI search.

Phase 2: E-E-A-T and Authority Signals for AI Search (March 25)

Phase 1 opened the door. Phase 2 was about giving AI reasons to trust what it found — building the E-E-A-T signals that drive AI platform citations and topical authority.

Schema expansion — Added Organization, WebSite, and BlogPosting structured data across the entire site. This connects every page into a coherent knowledge graph that AI can navigate and cite with confidence.

Author attribution — Added real author information to all 64 blog posts with Person schema. Before this, the blog posts were anonymous. AI models heavily weight authorship because it's a core E-E-A-T signal. No authorship means lower citation frequency in generative AI search results.

About page — Built a comprehensive About page with Person schema, professional background, and sameAs social links. This gives AI a way to verify that the author is a real person — a critical factor for Perplexity optimization and ChatGPT visibility.

llms-full.txt expansion — This was the single most impactful change for AI search traffic growth. I expanded the detailed AI-readable file to 5,500 words covering product features, pricing, technical architecture, use cases, and competitive positioning. Content depth correlates with a 4.3x citation multiplier in generative engines. I gave the AI platforms a comprehensive document they could confidently cite.

The key insight here: I didn't create new blog content. I created content for AI models. The llms-full.txt file isn't meant for human visitors — it's a dense, factual document designed to be the primary reference material when a generative AI search engine needs to recommend or describe SellerMockups. This is the core of any content strategy for generative search.

Phase 3: Freshness and Reinforcement (April 2)

The final phase focused on the signals that tell AI platforms the site is active, current, and maintained.

sameAs social links — Connected brand identity across platforms through schema markup. This helps AI verify the business is real and active.

dateModified and wordCount — Added these fields to all BlogPosting schema. Recent content modifications carry a 3.2x citation multiplier. Telling AI when content was last updated is a simple signal with outsized impact.

AuthorByline component — Added visible authorship on 25+ pages. This reinforces the structured data with visible on-page content. AI models cross-reference what schema says with what the page actually shows.

Branded OG images — Generated consistent, branded social sharing images. When AI platforms link to your site, the preview image matters for click-through.

The Results: AI Search Traffic Growth by the Numbers

Here's the AI search traffic growth between March 4 and April 8, compared to the previous 30 days (February 4 – March 3):

AI referral traffic: 1 → 43 sessions (+4,200%)

That 43 broke down across AI platforms:

  • ChatGPT: 26 sessions — became the #6 traffic source overall. From zero ChatGPT visibility to a top-10 channel.
  • Copilot: 8 sessions — with 5m 02s average engagement and 12.5 events/session
  • Perplexity: 5 sessions — confirming Perplexity citations were indexing the new structured data
  • Claude: 4 sessions

Combined AI referral traffic became the #3 traffic source, ahead of Google organic and paid ads.

But the number that surprised me most was the engagement quality. AI referral traffic wasn't bounce-and-leave visitors:

  • ChatGPT visitors: 1m 11s average engagement, 7.5 events/session, 88.46% engagement rate
  • Copilot visitors: 5m 02s average engagement, 12.5 events/session — the highest-quality traffic source on the entire site
  • Overall engagement rate jumped from 83.6% to 90.5%

The industry average for AI referral traffic share is less than 1% of total website traffic. SellerMockups hit 8.2% — more than 8x the benchmark.

The Halo Effect

This is the part that wasn't in the original plan: GEO improvements lifted traditional search too.

  • Bing organic: +825%
  • Yahoo organic: +3,200%
  • DuckDuckGo organic: +1,400%
  • Key events (conversions): +20.8%

The same structured data, authorship signals, and content depth that AI platforms reward also move the needle on traditional search engines. It's the same investment working across multiple channels.

What I'd Do Differently

If I were doing this again from scratch, I'd change the sequencing:

  1. llms-full.txt first. The expanded AI-readable content file had the biggest single impact. I'd start there instead of waiting for Phase 2.

  2. Author attribution earlier. Adding real authorship to the blog posts was easy and impactful. No reason to wait.

  3. Skip the comparison pages initially. They're good for long-term SEO, but the structured data and discovery files drove the AI traffic. The comparison pages can come later.

The bar for AI search visibility is low right now. Most websites have zero GEO optimization. Adding llms.txt, proper robots.txt permissions, and structured data for AI search puts you ahead of 95% of competitors overnight. Content depth beats content volume for LLM optimization. 64 blog posts didn't move the needle until they had proper structured data and authorship. AI referral traffic is pre-qualified. Visitors who arrive via AI recommendations have already been told what your product does and why it was recommended. They're past the awareness stage. That's why engagement metrics are so much higher than organic search or paid ads.

The compounding effect is real. GEO strategy improvements help AI platforms, traditional search engines, and user engagement simultaneously. One investment, multiple returns. Gartner predicts 25% of traditional search volume will shift to AI by end of 2026 — the businesses optimizing now are building a moat.
