How Local Businesses Get Recommended in AI Search

AI platforms build a local recommendation from many sources, and a business's own website is about half of them. This page explains what those sources are, using Avante's own study of 60 local markets.

How can my local business show up in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI?

Short answerThere is no single switch. AI platforms assemble a recommendation from a mix of sources: the business's own website, directories, review platforms, publishers, and community discussions. A local business improves its chances by being accurately and consistently described across the sources that appear for its own industry and city. No signal guarantees a recommendation.

Most advice on this subject is a list of tactics. This page starts from what was observed. In July 2026 Avante ran 120 live queries across six local industries in ten US metros and recorded every source the AI cited. The findings below come from that study unless another source is named.

What AI visibility involves for a local business

AI visibility can involve a combination of the sources below. The third column says what Avante's research observed for each one, including where it observed nothing. No single item on this list guarantees a recommendation.

Can I get my business listed on ChatGPT?

Short answerNot in the way a business is listed in a directory. OpenAI's search documentation does not describe a listing form or a paid placement for local businesses. It says a website becomes eligible for ChatGPT search by allowing OpenAI's crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and that placement is not guaranteed.

In OpenAI's words: “ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed.” The same page says ChatGPT may draw local information, such as nearby business listings, from third-party providers (Searching the web with ChatGPT, OpenAI Help Center, read September 27, 2026).

So the first practical step is a technical one: confirm that your website, your host, and any firewall allow OAI-SearchBot and the other AI crawlers. After that, the work is the same as for every platform: be described accurately and consistently in the places an AI is likely to look.

Why is my business not showing up on ChatGPT?

Short answerThe common reasons are that AI crawlers cannot reach the website, the site does not state clearly what the business does and where, the business is missing or inconsistent in the third-party sources the AI drew on, or the question asked does not match how the business is described. A single test can also miss a business that appears on other runs.

Check these in order, from the quickest to the slowest:

  1. Crawler access. A robots.txt rule, a firewall, or a hosting setting may be blocking AI crawlers without anyone having chosen that.
  2. Plain statements. Your site should say, in text, what you do, where you do it, and for whom.
  3. The question itself. Test the questions customers ask, not only your business name. You may appear for one and not the other.
  4. Third-party sources. Look at the sources shown with the answers for your category and city, and check whether your business is present and correct in them.
  5. Repeat the test. Answers vary. Absent once is not the same as absent every time.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor?

Short answerUsually because the competitor is described more clearly, more consistently, or in more of the sources the AI drew on for that question. It is rarely one thing. The way to find out is to look at which sources were shown with the answer and what they say about each business.

An AI answer names a short list. In Avante's study, the AI could list a median of 15 businesses operating in a market, and only 12.0% of those listed businesses appeared in its first five recommendations. Being known to the AI and being recommended by it were different results.

When a competitor is named and you are not, the sources shown with the answer are the best evidence available. Look at three things: whether the competitor has a page that answers that exact question, whether the competitor appears in the directories or lists that were cited, and whether the information about your own business is complete and consistent in those same places.

One caution. A single answer can name different businesses on different days. A competitor that appears once is not the same as a competitor that appears every time. That is why AI visibility is measured with repeated tests.

Can AI give customers incorrect information about my business?

Short answerYes. AI platforms can state a wrong address, outdated hours, services a business does not offer, or details that belong to a different business with a similar name. The errors usually trace back to conflicting or outdated information in the sources.

It has happened to us. AI systems merged the profile of Avante's founder with a photographer of the same name in another state. The fix was not a complaint to the AI company. It was making the correct facts explicit and consistent on our own site and profiles.

For a local business the common errors are an old address after a move, hours that changed, a service that was discontinued, and a service area that is too wide or too narrow. Check by asking each platform about your business by name and comparing every statement against what is true today.

Why isn't my website enough?

Short answerBecause a website is about half of what gets cited. In Avante's study, individual business websites received 49.6% of citations and third-party sources received 49.1%. A strong website is necessary. It does not cover the other half.

The website finding cuts both ways. Business websites were the largest single category of cited source, so the site is worth getting right. The other half of the citations went to sources the business does not own: directories, review platforms, publishers, and community threads.

Do reviews matter?

Short answerReview platforms are a regular part of the source mix, so what is written there can reach an AI answer. Avante's study found review platforms in 8.2% of citations. It did not test whether more reviews or a higher rating changes who is recommended.

Yelp was the second most-cited website in the study, with 75 citations. Almost all of those were category pages for a city, not individual business profiles. So the evidence says review platforms are consulted. It does not say a given star rating earns a place in the answer.

Outside research suggests the weight of reviews differs by platform. Yext Research found that Claude cited reviews and social media at rates 2 to 4 times higher than other models in most sectors (AI Citation Behavior Across Models, April 28, 2026, 17.2 million citations from Q4 2025).

Do directories matter?

Short answerYes, and which ones depends on the industry. In Avante's study the most-cited source for personal injury law was a legal directory, and for dentists it was an insurance provider directory. General advice to get listed everywhere is less useful than knowing which directories appear for your trade.

Does Reddit matter?

Short answerReddit threads were cited often in Avante's study, mostly city communities where residents ask for recommendations. That is a reason to know what is being said about your business and your category. It is not a reason to post promotional content, and it does not show that Reddit activity causes recommendations.

Reddit was cited in 53 of 60 recommendation answers in the study. All 81 Reddit citations were individual discussion threads. This is one platform on one day, and outside trackers have reported that Reddit's share on other platforms can change sharply within days. Treat it as a source to be aware of, not a channel to game.

Does schema help?

Short answerSchema helps machines read facts that are already on the page, such as the business name, address, hours, and services. It is worth having and keeping accurate. Avante has no evidence that schema by itself causes an AI recommendation, and Google states that no special optimization is required for its AI features.

Google's guidance for its AI features says that specific optimization is not required and that existing SEO fundamentals continue to be worthwhile. Among those fundamentals it lists making sure structured data matches the visible text on the page (AI features and your website, Google Search Central, last updated December 10, 2025).

The same applies to an llms.txt file. It can help some systems find the right pages. It is not a strategy, and anyone presenting schema or llms.txt as the whole answer is describing a task, not a plan. Avante's study did not test either one.

How can I find out what AI currently says about my business?

Short answerAsk the questions a customer would ask, without your business name, on the platforms your customers use. Ask each question more than once, and write down who was named, in what order, and which sources were shown. Then ask about your business by name and check every fact.

Doing this by hand takes an afternoon and costs nothing. Avante also offers a free AI visibility check that asks real buying questions about your business on two platforms and shows who was named and which sources were cited.

A full measurement, with a fixed question panel, repeated runs, competitor comparison, and an accuracy check, is what a GEO audit includes.

How do I know whether I actually have an AI visibility problem?

Short answerYou have one if customers in your market use AI to choose a business like yours, competitors are named consistently for unbranded questions, and you are not. If any of those is missing, AI visibility may not be your most pressing issue, and it is fine to conclude that.

Three checks, in order:

  1. Do your customers use AI for this decision? Ask new customers how they found you, and look for AI platforms among your referral sources in analytics.
  2. Are competitors named consistently? One appearance is not a pattern. The same competitor named across several questions and several runs is.
  3. Is something more urgent? If leads are short this month, or calls and forms are not being tracked, those come first. See GEO vs. SEO vs. Google Ads: where to invest first.

Local AI visibility checklist

Work through it in order. The first group tells you whether the rest is worth your time. Completing the list improves how accurately your business is represented. It does not guarantee a recommendation.

Find out where you stand

  • Write down 10 questions a new customer would ask, without your business name.
  • Ask each one on at least two AI platforms, more than once, and record who was named.
  • Record the sources shown with each answer.
  • Ask each platform about your business by name and check every fact it states.
  • Check your analytics for visits referred by AI platforms.

Your own website

  • Each service has its own page that says what it is, who it is for, and where you provide it.
  • Name, address, phone, and hours appear as text on the site.
  • AI crawlers are not blocked by robots.txt, a firewall, or the host.
  • Structured data matches what the page visibly says.

Sources you can manage

  • Google Business Profile is claimed, complete, and current.
  • Profiles are claimed on the directories that appeared in your own test answers.
  • Name, address, phone, and services match across every listing.
  • Reviews are recent, and you respond to them.

Sources you cannot control

  • You know which publishers and best-of lists appear for your category and city.
  • You know what community discussions say about your business, if anything.
  • You have a plan to earn coverage, not to manufacture mentions.

Keep measuring

  • The same questions are re-tested on a schedule, against the first results.
  • Calls, forms, and bookings are tracked, so a change in visibility can be tied to an outcome.
