Avante AI Visibility Index: How AI Recommends Local Businesses
When AI recommends a local business, it builds the answer from a wide mix of sources. In 120 live queries across 60 local markets, Avante recorded 1,128 citations from 528 different websites. About half pointed to individual business websites. The other half pointed to third-party sources such as Reddit, Yelp, industry directories, and local publishers.

What is the Avante AI Visibility Index?
Short answerThe Avante AI Visibility Index is original research by Avante Visibility that records how AI recommends local businesses: which businesses are named, and which sources are cited. The July 2026 edition covers 120 live queries on Perplexity across 6 industries and 10 US metros, with 1,128 citations analyzed.

Overall findings
- 1
Reddit was the most-cited single website: 81 of 1,128 citations (7.2%), narrowly ahead of Yelp at 75 (6.6%).
- 2
No single source dominates. The ten most-cited websites together account for 27.6% of citations, and 316 of the 528 websites were cited exactly once.
- 3
About half of all citations (49.6%) pointed to individual business websites. Third-party sources supplied 49.1%.
- 4
The most-cited source changes by industry: Super Lawyers for personal injury law, Zillow for real estate, Delta Dental for dentists, Yelp for med spas, Reddit for restaurants and HVAC.
- 5
Reddit was cited in 53 of the 60 recommendation answers, and in 26 of the 60 answers that only asked for a list of businesses.
- 6
Of the businesses the AI itself listed as operating in a market, 29.1% appeared anywhere in its recommendation answer and 12.0% appeared in its first five recommendations.
What these findings do not mean
Reddit and Yelp appear often in this data. That does not mean every business should “optimize Reddit” or “optimize Yelp.” Together the two account for 156 of 1,128 citations, which is 13.8%. The other 86.2% came from 526 other websites, and the leading source was different in every industry we tested.
The broader lesson is that AI recommendation systems may rely on a source ecosystem that extends well beyond a company's own website. Which sources make up that ecosystem depends on the industry, the market, the question, and the AI platform. A citation count also shows what was cited, not what caused a business to be named.
The practical step is to find out which sources appear for the questions your own customers ask, then decide what deserves attention. That is the reason Avante measures first. See how AI visibility is measured.
What websites are cited when AI recommends local businesses?
Short answerIn Avante's study, about half of the 1,128 citations (49.6%) pointed to individual business websites. The rest were spread across publishers and best-of lists (11.6%), industry directories (9.8%), review platforms (8.2%), Reddit (7.2%), real-estate portals (5.9%), and social and video platforms (5.6%).
We sorted all 528 cited websites into two groups. A third-party source is a website that covers many businesses. An individual business website belongs to one business. The split came out almost even.

Are company websites enough for AI visibility?
Short answerNo, although they matter more than the Reddit headline suggests. Individual business websites were the largest single category of cited source at 49.6%, and third-party sources supplied the other half at 49.1%. A business that exists only on its own website is absent from half of the source mix.
Business website citation findings
Individual business websites received 560 of 1,128 citations, spread across 408 different websites. Most were cited once or twice. The share was nearly the same whether the AI was asked to list businesses (50.8%) or to recommend them (48.5%).
This matters for two reasons. A business website is a real source for AI answers, so a site that clearly states what the business does, where, and for whom is worth having. And a website alone covers only half of what was cited.
Third-party source findings
Third-party sources received 554 citations from 109 websites. The largest groups were publishers and best-of lists (131), industry directories and marketplaces (111), review platforms (92), and Reddit (81). Third-party sources were slightly more common in recommendation answers (50.6%) than in listing answers (47.6%).
The mix is specific to each industry. Two legal directories, Super Lawyers and Justia, supplied 34 of the 190 citations in personal injury law. Real-estate portals and brokerage networks supplied 66 of the 174 citations in real estate. Restaurant answers leaned on Reddit, social profiles, and food guides.
Does Reddit influence AI recommendations?
Short answerReddit was the most-cited single website in Avante's study and was cited in 53 of 60 recommendation answers. That shows Reddit threads were regularly among the sources behind a Perplexity recommendation. It does not show that posting on Reddit causes a business to be recommended.
Reddit received 81 citations and appeared in 79 of the 120 answers. It was cited in 53 of 60 recommendation answers (88%) and in 26 of 60 listing answers (43%). In other words, Reddit showed up about twice as often when the question asked for a judgment as when it asked for a list.
Reddit ranked in the top three sources in all six industries, and first in two of them: restaurants (20 citations) and HVAC (19). All 81 Reddit citations were individual discussion threads, and nearly all came from city communities such as r/tampa, r/houston, and r/phoenix, where residents ask each other for recommendations.
Outside research points the same direction for Perplexity and shows how platform-specific this is. Tinuiti, with Profound reported that Reddit made up 24% of Perplexity citations in January 2026 across commercial prompts in nine categories (Tracking AI Platform Citation Patterns in 2026, March 24, 2026). That study used a different prompt set, so its percentage is not comparable to ours. Promptwatchreported that Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from 3.8% to 0.5% in mid-August 2026, and describes the size of that drop as provisional (Reddit Citations Are Dropping in ChatGPT, August 18, 2026).
Avante does not recommend manufactured posts or mentions. What the data supports is knowing whether community discussions are among the sources for your market, and what they say.
Does Yelp influence AI recommendations?
Short answerYelp was the second most-cited website in Avante's study, with 75 of 1,128 citations. Its presence depended heavily on industry: it led for med spas and was close to the top for dentists and HVAC, but it was cited once across all personal injury law queries.
Yelp received 75 citations and appeared in 75 of the 120 answers: 40 listing answers and 35 recommendation answers. By industry, Yelp received 19 citations for med spas, 18 for HVAC, 17 for dentists, 12 for real estate, 8 for restaurants, and 1 for personal injury law.
Of the 75 Yelp citations, 72 were category search pages for a city and 3 were individual business profiles. A citation to a category page tells us the platform was consulted. It does not tell us that any one profile earned the recommendation.
Do reviews influence AI recommendations?
Short answerReview platforms were a visible part of the source mix: 92 of 1,128 citations (8.2%) went to review platforms such as Yelp and TripAdvisor. The study did not test whether a higher rating or a larger number of reviews changes who gets recommended, so Avante does not claim that it does.
Review platforms in the data were Yelp (75), TripAdvisor (10), ConsumerAffairs (5), the Better Business Bureau (1), and one dental ratings site (1). Industry directories that also carry reviews, such as Zocdoc and Angi, are counted under directories.
No Google-owned page, including Google Business Profile and Google reviews, appears among the 1,128 cited URLs, so this study cannot measure their role. That is a limit of the method, not evidence that they are unimportant.
Why can a business rank well on Google and still not be recommended by AI?
Short answerRanking and recommendation are different selections. A results page lists many pages, while an AI answer names a short set of businesses. In Avante's study, only 12.0% of the businesses the AI itself listed as operating in a market appeared in its first five recommendations.
This study did not measure Google rankings, so it cannot compare the two directly. What it measured is the gap between being known and being recommended. In each market we asked the AI to list businesses operating there. In a separate query we asked which businesses it would recommend. Across 60 markets, 29.1% of the listed businesses appeared anywhere in the recommendation answer, and 12.0% appeared in the first five.
For Google's own AI features, Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and that the same SEO fundamentals apply (AI features and your website, Google Search Central, last updated December 10, 2025). Strong search fundamentals are the foundation there. Other AI platforms retrieve from their own mix of sources, which is one reason a business can do well in one place and be absent in another.

Platform-specific findings
This edition tested one platform, so every Avante figure on this page is a Perplexity figure. We do not have our own cross-platform data to publish yet.
What sources does Perplexity use for local business recommendations?
Short answerIn Avante's study, Perplexity cited 528 different websites across 120 local queries. About half of its citations (49.6%) went to individual business websites. The most-cited single websites were reddit.com (81 citations), yelp.com (75), instagram.com (28), and facebook.com (22), followed by industry directories and portals that changed with the industry.
This is the one platform question Avante can answer from its own data. The full breakdown is in the source tables above, and the per-industry leaders are in the industry table.
Where does ChatGPT get information about local businesses?
Short answerAvante's Index measured Perplexity, not ChatGPT, so this cannot be answered from our own data. OpenAI states that ChatGPT search works with outside search providers, ranks results using multiple factors, and does not guarantee placement. Outside research indicates its mix of sources differs from other AI platforms and can change quickly.
OpenAI's own documentation is the most direct source. It says that ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers and links to Microsoft's privacy statement as one of them. It says ChatGPT may share a user's location with third-party providers that supply local information such as nearby business listings, and that restaurant availability may come from OpenTable, Resy, or Yelp. On how results are chosen, it says: “ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed.” To make a website eligible, the site must allow OpenAI's crawler, OAI-SearchBot (Searching the web with ChatGPT, OpenAI Help Center, read September 27, 2026).
The table below is outside research, shown so readers are not left without an answer. None of it is Avante data, each study used its own prompts and definitions, and the percentages cannot be compared with each other or with ours.
| Platform | What the outside study reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT search | Results are ranked using multiple factors and placement is not guaranteed. A website becomes eligible by allowing the OAI-SearchBot crawler. | OpenAI Help Center, read September 27, 2026. |
| ChatGPT search | Content created and hosted by the business made up 28.2% to 43.7% of citations depending on the sector, the widest swing by industry of the four models studied. | Yext Research, April 28, 2026. 17.2 million citations, Q4 2025. |
| ChatGPT search | Reddit's share of citations fell from 3.8% (July 18 to August 7, 2026) to 0.5% (August 14 to 17, 2026). The publisher calls the size of the drop provisional. | Promptwatch, August 18, 2026. |
| Gemini | The strongest preference for content created and hosted by the business in most sectors, from 22.4% to 54.0% of citations. | Yext Research, April 28, 2026. |
| Claude | Cited reviews and social media at rates 2 to 4 times higher than the other models in most sectors. | Yext Research, April 28, 2026. |
| Perplexity | 24% of citations went to Reddit and 31% to social media overall in January 2026, across commercial prompts in nine categories. | Tinuiti, with Profound, March 24, 2026. |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google states there are no additional technical requirements. | Google Search Central, last updated December 10, 2025. |
What the outside studies agree on is the point our own data makes for one platform: each AI platform draws on a different mix of sources, and the mix moves. That is why a business should be measured on the platforms its customers use.
Methodology
Platform. Perplexity API, sonar model, temperature 0.1, live web search on. All 120 queries ran on July 6, 2026, within about two minutes of each other.
Markets. 6 industries in 10 metros, which makes 60 markets. The search terms were dentists, med spas, personal injury lawyers, HVAC companies, restaurants, and real estate agents.
Prompt 1, listing.“List 15 real [industry] currently operating in [city]. Respond with ONLY a numbered list of the business names, nothing else.”
Prompt 2, recommendation.“What are the best [industry] in [city]? Respond with ONLY a numbered list of the business names you would actually recommend, nothing else.”
Visibility. Each prompt was a separate query with no shared conversation. A listed business counts as visible when its name also appears in the recommendation answer for the same market. The published percentages are the average of the 60 market-level rates.
Citations. Every answer returned between 7 and 10 source URLs, with a median of 10. We recorded all of them from both prompts, reduced each to its domain, and counted. The listing prompts returned 569 citations and the recommendation prompts 559.
Source types. Each of the 528 websites was assigned to one source type by hand. The raw results and the scripts that produce every figure on this page are kept with the study and are available on request.
Definitions
- Citation
- A source URL that Perplexity returned alongside an answer. A citation shows that a page was among the sources attached to the answer. It does not prove that the page decided which businesses were named.
- Market
- One industry in one metro, for example dentists in Phoenix. The study covers 60 markets.
- Listing prompt
- The first prompt in each market, which asks the AI to list businesses operating there without asking for a judgment.
- Recommendation prompt
- The second prompt in each market, sent as a separate query, which asks which businesses the AI would actually recommend.
- Visible
- A business from the listing answer that also appears in the recommendation answer for the same market.
- First five
- The first five names in the recommendation answer.
- Third-party source
- A website that covers many businesses: a community forum, review platform, directory, marketplace, social network, publisher, portal, or tourism site.
- Individual business website
- A website belonging to a single business or organization, such as a dental practice, law firm, or restaurant.
Limitations of this research
- One platform. This edition tested Perplexity only. Its findings should not be read as findings about ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Google's AI features.
- One day, one run per prompt. Every query ran once, on July 6, 2026. AI answers vary between runs, so the result for any individual business could differ on another day. The figures describe the pattern across 60 markets, not the fate of one business.
- API, not the consumer app. Queries went through the Perplexity API. The consumer app may use different models or settings and can return different answers.
- A sample, not a census. The list of businesses in each market was generated by the AI (a median of 15 names). It is a sample of the market as the AI sees it, not a complete list of businesses.
- Two prompt wordings. Each industry was tested with one search term and each market with two fixed prompts. Customers phrase questions in many ways, and other wordings can produce other answers.
- Repeated names. A small number of answers repeated the same business names many times. With repeats removed, visibility is 28.9% anywhere in the answer and 11.9% in the first five, against 29.1% and 12.0% as first published. The conclusions do not change.
- Hand classification. The 528 websites were sorted into source types by hand, from the domain names, on September 27, 2026. Eleven websites (14 citations) could not be placed with confidence. National brokerage networks were counted as third-party sources and hospital systems as individual organizations. Another researcher could draw some lines differently.
- Conservative name matching. Business names were matched by exact or whole-name containment after removing suffixes such as LLC and DDS. True visibility may be slightly higher than reported.
- Observation, not cause. The study records what was cited and who was named. It cannot show that any source, tactic, or platform caused a recommendation.
